Still in 2014, and we have yet another Tommy related item for sale. This time a New York Comic Con exclusive, which is a key pack of all his ranger forms. There is no doubt that Tommy is one of the most recognized faces of the Power Rangers franchise, but to always give this one ranger so much constant attention gets tiring. Over 20 years, and over 100 rangers, Bandai seems to make Tommy their sole focus. I’m not alone when I say that I’m Tommy’d out.
Bandai has so many potential money making options besides Tommy related items. What happened to the Morphin Madness key pack? Oh right, they tried to rig that so they could sell a special Tommy pack. Now here they are actually doing it. Keys that are already available in stores. Just painted metallic to make them seem special. What about the other rangers that haven’t gotten keys yet like the females, or sixth rangers? Still waiting on those.
It’s not just Tommy that I’m getting tired of getting focus, but the man behind the character, Jason David Frank. Here we have a guy who has been displaying inexcusable behavior on his social media channels. Behavior that is the complete opposite of a role model, and certainly behavior that does not deserve the title of, “Brand Ambassador.” Popularity should not warrant the attention of companies to cash in. Not when someone is displaying behavior that is the exact opposite of what your franchise stands for in the first place.
This latest item just continues to help fuel JDF’s ego on being, “the most popular ranger of all time.” Please Bandai, can we just put the breaks on the Tommy items and focus on some other rangers?
